Day 15 – What Artificial Intelligence Cannot Give Us: Belonging

Imagine an employee whose AI assistant knows every project, reminds her of deadlines, drafts her reports, translates messages and suggests answers before she finishes typing the question. The system is extraordinarily useful. Yet when she considers leaving the company, what she will miss is probably not the software.

She will miss the people who knew her story, the colleague who noticed when something was wrong, the team that trusted her judgement and the moments when her contribution mattered to something larger than her task list.

That experience is belonging, and it is difficult to automate.

Sam Alfa’s interdependence framework gives belonging a practical foundation. Human beings do not merely exist beside one another; meaning grows through contribution, recognition and mutual connection. When the Heart Grows Quiet warns that technology can create superficial connection and a sense that human contribution is less valuable as machines take over tasks.

AI makes this issue urgent because it is becoming excellent at many forms of assistance. It can reduce dependence on particular colleagues for information. It can lower the friction of communication. It can allow individuals to accomplish work that once required larger teams. Those gains may increase independence, but independence without deliberate community can also increase isolation.

Belonging does not mean employees must socialise constantly or treat the workplace as family. It means people understand where they fit, how their work contributes, who relies on them and who they can rely on. It means dignity is not determined solely by whether a machine can perform part of their role faster.

The strongest AI strategy therefore includes a human contribution strategy. As tasks change, leaders should help people see how their value is moving rather than simply which activities are disappearing. If AI drafts the report, perhaps the professional’s role becomes interpretation and challenge. If AI answers routine customer questions, perhaps the human role becomes judgement in complex or emotional situations. If AI generates options, people still own responsibility for choosing among them.

Belonging grows when people are needed in meaningful ways.

Organisations should watch for a subtle danger: employees may remain productive while becoming psychologically detached. Output metrics can hide the fact that people no longer feel part of the enterprise. When that happens, retention, trust, discretionary effort and collaboration eventually suffer.

The future of work should not force a choice between intelligent technology and human community. The more capability technology creates, the more intentionally organisations may need to create spaces where contribution is recognised and relationships are real.

Reflection: If AI removed 30 percent of the routine work in your role, what uniquely human contribution would become more important? Does your organisation have a plan for strengthening that contribution—and the belonging that comes with it?
